This downloadable beading tutorial will teach you how to make the Orca beaded box. The finished box is about 4″ high (including Orca – storage height is about 2″) and about 2″ wide. Let me tell you a little more about the materials and techniques you will be using.

Materials

You are going to be working with the following beads:

  • Size 10 delicas
  • Size 11 Miyuki seed beads
  • GemDuo beads

You will also need your favourite beading thread. This will need to be something that gives you good strong tension to ensure the box holds its shape. My personal recommendation is Fireline, but you are free to experiment if you wish.

Experience and Techniques

This project is for confident intermediate or advanced beaders. You will be working mostly in Peyote stitch, but also using some very basic CRAW and brick stitch.

For those of you who are less confident, you may prefer to take the online class as that gives you video demonstrations of the techniques in addition to the PDF tutorial. You can find the class at this link: https://my-world-of-beads.teachable.com/p/orca-beaded-box-mini-online-class.

I am not able to offer additional help via email if you just have the tutorial. But if you are enrolled in the class, you will be able to ask questions and get personal help in there, should you need it.

Inspiration behind the Orca beaded box

People always ask me where I get my ideas. For the most part, I don’t know – they just pop into my head. But with this project, I can tell you exactly how and where the idea came to me.

I was actually doing a new meditation (I meditate to help with healing my CFS/ME). As I sat there, eyes closed, relaxing, I suddenly had the vision of the box that you see. More than that, the box actually took shape in my mind, so I could see which beads I needed to use, and how to combine the techniques to create this. Naturally, I was curious to see how this would work in reality.

Well, unbelievably, I followed the plan that had come to me and the result was this Orca beaded box. It just came together with no drama or difficulty!

Orcas are very special to me. I have been privileged to have incredibly close encounters with them in the wild on a couple of occasions. So, it has been lovely to preserve those memories in this beading project. I hope you also enjoy creating it.
