About the Valentines Necklace

When I was commissioned to create a Valentine’s necklace with a shabby chic feel, I jumped at the opportunity, then realised that although I am familiar with the term ‘shabby chic’, I didn’t know precisely how to define it in order to create a piece of jewellery. So I did a little research in order to work out what the term means to me. I discovered that in terms of colouring, the main focus is usually white, but other pastel colours like pale blue or pale pink are also associated with the style. It a style that is feminine, possibly French Rococo, and, above all it’s about age and timelessness. Shabby chic furniture is either actually very old, bearing marks of wear and repainting, or specifically designed to have that appearance.

From this, I have taken a colour scheme of white and pale pink. I immediately thought about using hearts for the Valentine’s element, along with roses and bows. I selected a heart that is foil lined and I felt gave an appearance of the wear of age. I used pearls for their timelessness, antique silver finish to the chain and I wanted to create something reminiscent of the swags and drapes that might appear in a shabby chic interior design. The resulting Valentine’s necklace involves some stringing and then using Peyote stitch and Right Angle Weave to create the bow and roses. I finished the whole piece with a ribbon tie, woven through the chain, but you can use a more conventional clasp if you prefer.

If you like this Valentine’s necklace project, you might wish to pair it with one of my other Valentines inspired beading projects. You can find more ideas in this blog post.
