This gives you two tutorials for easy fascinators to make at home. I created these with kits that I was sent by Jewellery Maker for my second show, which was themed, ‘A Day at the Races’. The kits contained two types of fascinator base and a selection of gemstones and seed beads. I had a lot of fun creating fascinators, trying to use the seed beads to mimic elements that you might find on a conventional fascinator. So if you’re not an experienced beader, it’s no problem. I used easy techniques here, but you could easily substitute the beaded motifs I created with a ready-made motif. The only technical ability you need for these easy fascinators is the ability to sew!
Easy Fascinators to Make: the Hat
This design is the simplest of the two. I used Superduos to make the little series of three motifs that formed the bow on the hat design. If you are not used to this kind of work, then just find three large round beads and use them instead. The main section of the hat was made by simply embroidering the beads on the fascinator base. It was really easy to stitch through and bead embroidery is a simple and accessible route into beading. I then just strung the pearls to overhang the edge of the fascinator. This is all shown in the tutorial that you get here.
Easy fascinators to make: A little bit of nothing
The second of my easy fascinators to make in a day is one that I called ‘A little bit of nothing’. I’ve heard that description applied to fascinators in general. They are lightweight to wear, a little bit frivolous and not too overpowering, so this is what I aimed to achieve in this design. Again, being a beader, I created some beaded elements: little flower motifs and a string of beads that could be stitched on to create some ‘architectural’ interest in the design. You can always buy flower shaped beads to stitch directly on and use some stiffened ribbon to replace the bead structure if you wish.
I hope you will enjoy these designs – they certainly inspired me to try some more ideas as I realised just how easy it is to make a fascinator!
