These superduo penguins are so quick and easy to make…much easier than they look! So, let me tell you a little more about the project…

Materials

You simply need superduos and size 8 seed beads. You’ll just need black and white superduos. Twin hole beads are not advisable for this as they don’t ‘slot’ together quite as well, so probably won’t give as much stability to the structure.

You can use any brand of size 8 seed beads. And you can get colourful with the hats and scarves. I’ve included instructions for making the candy-striped scarf if you want to give that design a try.

You can also get creative with the bobbles on the hats. So, you may want to stick with your size 8 seed beads for these. Or, you can get fancy and use up odds and ends of different beads (I used some leftover dagger beads for my blue hat).

You will need beading thread that gives excellent tension – I have recommended fireline.

Experience and techniques

The superduo penguins are made almost entirely in tubular Peyote stitch. You will use a tiny bit of flat even count and odd count to complete the scarf and wings. But these are all very basic techniques.

You should be good at following written instructions in order to complete this project. I have given you 11 pages of detailed instructions, with lots of tips to help.

So, this is aimed at intermediate beaders. But if you are advanced, it is a fun project. If you’re still a beginner, I have also linked to this online class which will help with basic techniques.

About the superduo penguins

These little guys are about 3″ (8cm) high and 1.5″ (4cm) across the base. Their wings will move and flap open if you wish! They are completely self-supporting. So, you don’t need any kind of stuffing or stiffening materials for these penguins.

They can be made in under three hours and are a lot of fun! As you’ll see from the photos, they have become good friends with my superduo gnomes. So, if you have already enjoyed making gnomes, you’re sure to love these penguins too! And if you haven’t tried a gnome yet, maybe you should grab that tutorial as well!
