What is Modified Right Angle Weave?

Right Angle Weave (RAW) can be used as a stitch to create full pieces of jewellery or beadwork. However, it is often also used as the base for creating a casing to fit around a cabochon. To do this, start by creating the initial RAW row. Then convert to Peyote stitch to pull the casing inwards around the stone (take a look at the photo). You can stitch the RAW row, then add the Peyote edge. But this can all be done in one step using Modified Right Angle Weave (MRAW or mraw).

There may be other types of project where you want to convert from RAW to Peyote. You can use Modified Right Angle Weave in all these cases.

Why Use Modified Right Angle Weave?

Apart from saving time by doing two steps at once, a lot of people actually find Modified Right Angle Weave a lot easier to understand than RAW.

Although the bead layout ends up the same, the thread path for MRAW means that you will be working round in circles in a single direction. This is instead of working one circle clockwise, then the next one anti-clockwise as you do for a basic RAW row. The end result is the same, but the process is considerably easier.

This free techniques sheet shows you the thread path for Modified Right Angle Weave. It teaches you how to use it to create the basic casing for a cabochon or Rivoli.

You will want to be familiar with ordinary Right Angle Weave and Peyote stitch to get the most out of this tutorial. So, if these techniques are new to you, just follow the links to get free tutorials for those as well!

This free technique sheet is illustrated with easy-to-follow diagrams. It uses colour to help you understand this simple thread path.

I have a few projects on here that use the technique. So you can use this guide alongside the projects to make your beading as easy as possible.
