Description
Free brick stitch tutorial from Katie Dean. This is a really simple guide to starting out in brick stitch. It assumes that you already have some basic beading skills. Although you might want to take advantage of this free tutorial to give you some help.
About the Free Brick Stitch Tutorial
This free brick stitch tutorial will show you how to create a ladder stitch foundation row. Then build on it to work rows in brick stitch. Although my free brick stitch tutorial mentions the basic technique for tubular brick stitch, it does not go into details.
Once you have understood the basic technique for working in flat brick stitch, you are ready to move on to shaping your flat piece of beadwork and following a pattern.
This free brick stitch tutorial also covers how to read a brick stitch pattern so that you can shape a flat piece of brick stitch. The tricky element to this is understanding where to start and finish a row. This tutorial takes a basic leaf shape. I show you how to analyse it row by row. So you can determine where is the best place to start beading and how to shape each row.
More Useful Information
If you are completely new to brick stitch, then you might like to read my handy guide. This explains what the stitch looks like and how it is formed. This knowledge will be very helpful as you are following this free brick stitch tutorial.
One final word of advice: brick stitch gives an identical arrangement of beads to peyote stitch. However, it has the appearance of the beads lying on their side, rather than sitting upwards. If you are given a finished piece of beadwork made in one or other of these stitches, it is almost impossible to tell which technique was used. This is important.
There are some patterns for which it is easier to work in peyote stitch to create your flat shape, or vice versa. It also means that paper patterns can be worked in either stitch. Take a pattern that is labelled as peyote stitch and turn it ninety degrees. It then becomes laid out in brick stitch formation. If this all seems like a foreign language at the moment, don’t worry. Once you have mastered the two techniques, all will become clear!
