This IrisDuo necklace pattern is my first project with the IrisDuo beads. I have mixed in some other Potomac Beads and more traditional seed beads. So, you can find all the materials you need in my beading supplies right here.

Materials

For this necklace, you will need:

  • DiscDuos
  • IrisDuos
  • 4mm Firepolish
  • Seed beads in sizes 8 and 11
  • Your choice of thread

Experience and Techniques

The IrisDuo necklace uses pretty basic techniques. So, if you are used to working with multi-holed shaped seed beads, you will understand that much of the stitching is really just stringing.

I have included a beaded clasp in this design. So, you will need a little bit of even count Peyote for that. But this is a lovely simple technique. If you haven’t tried it before, then I do have a free tutorial that will teach you. Plus the instructions in the pattern are lovely and clear.

All the steps are illustrated with diagrams as well as the descriptions. So, you shouldn’t have any problem following this pattern, whatever your level.

The story behind the IrisDuo necklace

So, maybe you are wondering about the weird name, Osteospermum? I mean, how on earth does that relate to this necklace?

If you’re not into gardening or flowers, then the first thing I need to tell you is that an Osteospermum is a flower! I’m not much of a gardener myself, but I have got to know a lot of flowers through my French beading. And I happen to think that Osteospermum are really rather lovely!

So, how does this relate to the necklace?

Well, I simply created this design by sitting down and trying out things with my beads. I was keen to try out the IrisDuos since they are new on the beading scene. I don’t know what they make you think about, but I thought of flower petals.

So, I started with a circle, added some other beads and just waited to see where the journey would take me. As with most design work, the journey included a lot of unpicking and re-trying. But every ‘mistake’ is a lesson learned.

To cut a long and boring story short, I eventually ended up with the motif you can see at the front of my IrisDuo necklace. If you already follow my beadwork, then you know how my brain takes some strange twists and turns. So, something about this little motif summoned up an image of Osteospermum flowers.

If you’re still wondering what I’m going on about, then you’ll just have to download the pattern… I included a photo of the flower I was picturing. Can you see the link too…?
