Valentines heart charm

This is a quick project that is suitable for all levels. It is perfect if you are looking for a little something to personalise a Valentine’s gift. The Valentines heart charm is made using basic wirework techniques. The pattern will take you through everything step-by-step, so you do not need to have any prior experience of beading or wirework.

About the project

I designed the Valentines heart charm as part of my City and Guilds teaching course. When I was nearing the end of the course, I had to conduct a short teaching session for the other students on the course with me. The session was assessed as part of my qualification. All the students were hoping to teach different subjects. So we each had to design a ‘class’ that would last for just fifteen minutes.

This seemed like quite a challenge for beadwork, but my class was due to take place just before Valentine’s day. So that guided me towards a project on that theme.

As some of my students might potentially be male, I didn’t want to teach a piece of jewellery, but make something with a practical use. I thought this Valentines heart charm would be perfect to add to a gift or card and, being wirework, I hoped it wouldn’t seem too ‘girlie’! I was also teaching a set of complete beginners. So I had to design something that would be quick and easily accessible. It turned out that this valentines heart charm proved so popular that I decided to publish the pattern.

You will need some heart shaped beads (although these can be replaced by red seed beads), some silver coloured seed beads and 24 gauge wire. You only need basic tools: wire cutters and  possibly round nose pliers. I managed to teach the project in the time allotted. So that gives you some idea of how quick this is to make…enjoy!
