Seed Bead Chain

Learn how to use basic herringbone to make a seed bead chain. This pattern is suitable for all levels. The pattern will teach you how to use seed beads to create links, then join these links to make a seed bead chain maille design.

I designed this project after being asked if I could create some designs with Duracoat delicas. So, I chose to experiment with colour mixing and creating an interesting chain. I used a variation of a chain maille technique to show off my chosen seed bead colours.

The design will work best with Delicas as they are such a regular shape. But if you only have seed beads from a different manufacturer, this will also work. I made this design in size 11 as it creates a very dainty and wearable bracelet. However, it would also work in size 8 beads for a chunkier look. You can also have  a lot of fun experimenting with different colour combinations. I deliberately chose a darker background colour that would set off the yellow and hydrangea highlights. But the possible combinations are pretty much endless.

You will learn how to work in basic herringbone. For my project, I used the clasp design that is from my beaded clasps book, but you could use any kind of beaded clasp or a ready-made clasp. The pattern for the clasp is available in the book, so I have not reproduced it in this project.

I love mixing up different techniques. It may seem a little crazy to spend time bead-weaving links when you can just buy jump rings, but the effect of this seed bead chain is well worth the effort! This also makes for a project that you can easily pick up and put down as you can grow the chain link by link. So, enjoy!
