This Queen of Hearts beaded box measures about 3.5″ x 2.25″ x 1″. So, it provides excellent storage space inside. You will be working in a mix of techniques, using seed beads. So, let me tell you a little more about the project.

Materials

You will need size 11 seed beads and size 11 delicas to make this beaded box.

It is important that you use the exact beads I’ve specified. You are going to be combining them to create the structure and design. So, if you try this with different beads, it’s not going to work!

You will also need your favourite beading thread. You should use something that gives you good tension. My recommendation is Fireline.

I have detailed all of this in the tutorial as well.

Experience and Techniques

This is a project for confident beaders. You are going to be working in Peyote stitch and also Cubic Right Angle Weave.

For the Peyote section, I have included a pattern chart and a word chart. The CRAW sections use the basic technique and some simple embellishment. So, I have assumed you already know the basics.

If you do find you need any extra help, you can see all the techniques demonstrated on video in this online class.

About the Queen of Hearts Beaded Box

This design originally appeared in the Beadworker’s Guild Journal in 2020. I am now able to share it on my website for anyone who is not a member of the Guild.

The inspiration came from the theme of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. The Queen of Hearts and the playing cards are such an iconic part of that story, I always think.

I love designing Peyote patterns and the playing card seemed to lend itself to this. I also love making beaded boxes, as you probably know. So, combining the two ideas, I came up with a deck of cards displaying the Queen of Hearts on top. I tried to add embellishment to the box to create the effect of the pile of cards. This has resulted in a really sturdy structure that is a lot of fun to use.

Naturally, this idea also took on a life of its own. So, why just stop at one playing card when you make them all? That is what led me to design my entire deck of playing cards…not as boxes, but fun nevertheless!
