This nautical earrings pattern uses tubular stacked brick stitch to make circular shapes. The pattern assumes that you are already familiar with basic brick stitch. So, it focuses on the technique for using the stacks to create a circle.

You can adapt this pattern to make a bracelet or necklace with the circles. Although I picked a nautical theme, you can make this design in any colourway you like. The pattern includes detailed instructions and diagrams.

Technique for Nautical Earrings

I stumbled upon this design as I was experimenting. I had been working in tubular brick stitch for one project. For another project, I had been using stacked brick stitch. So, I wondered what would happen if I put those two ideas together. Well, I discovered that I could create little rings!

I confess, my first little ring sat around for a long time before I turned it into these nautical earrings. I had been asked to teach a project at the Big Bead Show and I wanted something quick. Usually I find it helps if I can focus on a single technique that the students can repeat. So, that way, they learn all they need from me, then go home to complete the project. Anyway, with this thought in mind, I stumbled upon my brick stitch ring. I realised I could turn it into a bigger piece of jewellery…

So, where does that leave you? Well, as long as you understand the basic principles of brick stitch, you will be able to do this project. If you don’t already know how to work in brick stitch, then I have several free tutorials covering different aspects of the technique. You should download the basic tutorial and the tubular tutorial.

What materials do I need?

The nautical earrings are made with seed beads. So, to begin with, pick out two colours of seed bead. Then you will need size 11 and size 8 beads in each colour. Once you have learned the techniques, you can then make these earrings in a single colour or try other combinations.

If you do try something different, I would love you to send me a photo so I can showcase it for inspiration!

In addition to the seed beads, I used 4mm pearls to link my rings. If you are making the earrings, then you will need some earring findings. If you decide to link your rings into a necklace or bracelet, then you will need a clasp. You will also need beading thread. You can check my beading supplies if you need to get any of these materials.

I am also on hand to help. So, please contact me if you have any questions.
