About the Maple Leaf Bead Pattern

I designed this Maple Leaf bead pattern back in 2015. I chose to use size 11 Delicas and make a pair of earrings. However, this also works well with larger beads to make a pendant. Equally, you could go right down to tiny size 15 seed beads for charms. If you want to get more creative, then combine several of these leaves to make a necklace or bracelet.

The Maple leaf is made in Square Stitch. I think this stitch is often associated as an alternative to loom work, or as nothing more than a way of beading flat patterns. In this project, you will learn how to create shaping in square stitch. The Maple leaf bead pattern assumes that you are already familiar with the basic Square stitch technique. If this is not the case, then you can find a free tutorial here. This will take you through the basics before you start on the earrings.

I chose to use delicas because they have such a regular shape, so this will help you create a really even finish. However, the pattern will work with ordinary seed beads. If you are thinking about making the pendant, then how about trying size 10 delicas?

The pattern instructions are detailed enough to take you through the technique for shaping, that is, increasing and decreasing at the end of a row. If you like the idea of using square stitch for more than just flat strips, then you may also enjoy my Ivy pattern from ‘Beaded Christmas Table‘. You can find lots more square stitch patterns here. I hope that I will manage to convince you that square stitch is a really interesting technique with a lot of beading potential. If you enjoy this Maple leaf bead pattern, then you will probably also like the Autumn Leaves necklace. This project uses brick stitch to make leaves.
