This donkey beading pattern is part of my special Nativity set. Although, of course, you can just enjoy it as a donkey if you are a fan of those animals. Now, if you don’t know much about it, my beaded Nativity set is special for one reason. Each of the characters can also be made as a beaded box. So, that gives you storage space inside them, to hide little gifts, or maybe fill with festive spices. You can find the whole Nativity set at this link.

Let me tell you more about the donkey beading pattern…

Materials

You are going to need size 10 Delicas and size 11 seed beads to make your donkey. Now, you may have chosen to make your own Nativity set in size 11 beads. So, if that is the case, you can also make this donkey using size 11 Delicas and size 15 seed beads.

You will also want your favourite beading thread. My personal choice is Fireline, but you can use something different if you wish.

Experience and Techniques

This is an advanced beading project. You are going to be working in Peyote stitch. But, there are also elements that you may need to freeform a little. Certainly, you will be asked to use your common sense and initiative as you work through this project.

I have included step-by-step instructions with detailed diagrams and photos. So, the pattern does give you a lot of information.

You should already be very competent in all aspects of Peyote stitch before you begin this project. So, if there are things you need to learn before starting the pattern, then use this link for a set of free tutorials.

About the donkey beading pattern

Now, I began by saying that my Nativity set is made up of beaded boxes. Well, this donkey is no exception. His back opens up to reveal storage space in the body, as you can see in the photos.

However, if you don’t want a beaded box, you can make the donkey as a normal ornament. I have included instructions for doing that.

The donkey is sized to fit with my other Nativity figures. So, made with size 10 Delicas, the donkey measures 3″ long and 2.25″ high. If you were to use size 11 Delicas, this would reduce the size by about a third.
