Beaded Baubles

If you’re a beader then it can feel almost obligatory to make new beaded baubles for your Christmas tree every year.

You can find a lot of different patterns on the market now. These range from the very quick-to-make, to lengthy and ornate projects.

Whichever you choose, you know you will be creating a family heirloom. It will hopefully become part of your Christmas tradition for generations to come.

Snowscene Bauble Materials

I purchased the bauble base for this project from GJ Beads. You will also need:

  • size 11 delicas
  • 4mm pearls
  • one spike bead in crystal

Check the beading supplies on this website as well.

Experience and Techniques

This is a project that will take you a little while to make and you will be using Peyote stitch and netting. You can play around with the design to add your own arrangement of trees and snowflakes. So, you will create your own unique family heirloom.

Origins of the design

I made my first foray into designing beaded baubles in 2013. So, I am now trying to add a new design every year…some years I’ve managed two!

I have seen many beaded baubles with netting over them. In fact, I was very lucky to be the recipient of one made by a beading friend. So, that has an honoured place on my own Christmas tree.

I have also seen beaded baubles with beautiful patterned bands around them and I wanted to combine the two ideas. So I started thinking of a theme for my design.

As I was looking through the collection of baubles available on GJ Beads website, a brilliant blue bauble caught my eye. Perhaps not the most obvious colour for Christmas, but it is a colour that I adore. So, I wanted to create something with it.

The blue reminded me of the sky on a clear winter’s night, or perhaps a crisp frosty day. So, I came to think of a snowy scene. I created a Peyote band with shaping to represent snow, then added pearls to look like snow falling from the sky. I adorned the scene with snowy trees. To prevent the scene from riding upwards and falling off the bauble, I constructed more snow leading down to an icicle dangling from the bauble.

If you want some quicker, simpler beaded bauble ideas, then you might like my Peyote stars design or the herringbone parcel theme. Or why not go for a bead embroidered decoration?
