This Ogalala butterfly necklace is an incredibly easy project. So, it is perfect for complete beginners – or anyone else!

Materials

The ogalala butterfly necklace also happens to be a great project for getting rid of leftover beads. So, you may not need to buy any materials for this.

You will need about 20g of seed beads in size 11 or size 8, or a mix of the two sizes. They can be a mix of colours. In fact, as you see from the photos, the more mixed the colours, the better!

Then, you will also need some larger beads. 4mm to 6mm is about the right size. Although you can go as big as 8-10mm if you wish.

You can use any kind of beads for these. So, you might have some odd beads left over from strings. Or maybe a few beads left from packets of pearls, crystals or firepolish. You can also use up some two-holed beads if you wish. Literally, anything goes here!

In addition to the beads, you need a couple of split rings and a clasp of your choice. Plus some beading thread.

If you are completely new to beading and this is your first project, then you can choose some beads from me. I have lots of options available in my beading supplies department here>>

Experience and Techniques

You don’t need any previous experience for this project. The technique is a specialist form of netting. But I have explained everything in detail, with photos and diagrams. So, you can follow this, whatever your level.

If you need any help with general beading terms and basics like finishing thread, check out this website. It is a mine of helpful information!

About the Ogalala butterfly necklace

Apart from the detailed instructions, I have included a few extras in this pattern. So, I spend some time talking about how to choose your beads and offering some suggestions for colour schemes.

This is a great project to experiment with colouring, whatever your level of experience as a beader. You can also try some different variations once you have learned the basics.
