Floral Necklace Design

As soon as I saw Chilli beads, I thought of flower petals. I began with the floral motif you can see at the front of the necklace. But the bead structure soon led me to a dilemma as to how I was going to link the flowers. I have ended up with a design that is very dimensional in nature. So the floral motifs are raised above the main peyote stitch strips.

Techniques and Tips

You will make the necklace as a series of components joined together. The focal front section is quite straightforward, so suitable for intermediate level beaders.

I wanted to carry the floral theme on into the rope. So I created a design that combines Cubic Right Angle Weave rope, moving seamlessly into sections of tubular peyote with the floral pattern. This is a more advanced technique, but if you feel unable to attempt this, you can use any type of rope you wish. You can even replace the beaded rope with some simple bead-stringing, or a chain or piece of leather thong.

Similarly, I chose to complete my necklace with a beaded clasp taken from my book. So the instructions for the clasp are not included with this pattern. However, the design will work just as well with any other type of clasp.

The floral focal section combines Chilli beads with Superduos and uses Dome beads for the centres. The remainder of the necklace is made in Peyote stitch using the size 11 seed beads. I used Miyuki brand and would recommend sticking to this as you will find slight variations in size between different bead brands. So I cannot guarantee the results with another seed bead brand…although I would be interested to hear if you do experiment.
