Description

This carrier beads chevron necklace uses the traditional idea of covering carrier beads with Peyote strips. But this time, you’ll be adding the strips horizontally, rather than vertically. So, keep reading to find out why!

Materials

The carrier beads chevron necklace requires the following materials:

  • Carrier beads
  • Size 15 delicas
  • Size 11 delicas
  • A clasp of your choice
  • Your choice of beading thread

I have all these materials available here in my beading supplies department>>

Advice on colouring

The tutorial includes details of the colours I have used. But if you want to re-colour this necklace, let me show you how.

Start by choosing your carrier beads. Then, you need two colours of size 11 delicas that are different to your carrier beads, but look good with them. Find a colour of size 15 delicas that contrasts with the 11/0s, but still works with your carrier bead.

For the rope, you will need size 11 delicas that match your carrier beads well.

Experience and Techniques

This is an intermediate level project. You are going to be working with size 15 beads, so that’s not a great idea if you’re a complete beginner! Although you will be using simple even count peyote, you are going to learn a little technique for joining your covered carrier beads. So, this is better suited to beaders who have a little experience.

I have shown you how to make a spiral herringbone rope. But again, I assumed you have some basic knowledge of herringbone. So, if you don’t understand the rope, you can always just use a beaded rope of your choice.

About the carrier beads chevron necklace

I designed this necklace because I wanted to see if I could join carrier beads in a ‘staggered’ arrangement, rather than just horizontally or vertically.

This idea is more challenging that you might think because of the two holes in the carriers. You need to find a way of moving from one hole to the other and also of creating a stable structure. So, I developed the classic idea of peyote coverings to create the effect I wanted.

Having learned how to join carrier beads in this way, I now have all sorts of design potential available. Zig zags anyone…?
