I originally designed this spellbook locket as a commission for a Hermione Granger fan. So, maybe that’s you, or someone you know. But it is a design that works well for anyone who loves magic, steampunk or fantasy.

Materials

You just need size 11 Delicas for this project. You will need four colours. In the tutorial, I have given you the colour codes that I used. However, you might like to change them to your own favourite colouring.

In honour of the theme, I designed a Gryffindor inspired logo for the back cover of the book. So, this really dictated my colour scheme. You could personalise your design and alter the back cover to reflect that. In this case, you might want to use very different colouring.

You will also need your favourite beading thread and scissors.

Techniques

This is actually quite an advanced project. Adding the pages that form the frame for the photos inside the locket is a tricky technique. You will need to be very confident in odd count Peyote. You also need to be able to work in basic herringbone and understand the ladder stitch thread path. Plus, the project involves reading Peyote stitch charts. If you need clarification on any beading techniques, check out this blog>>

If that has scared you death, don’t be! I have written really clear instructions with lots of diagrams to illustrate thread paths, so you are getting 12 pages of instructions here.

You can also refresh your memory with free tutorials covering the basic techniques, which you can download from me here>>

About the Spellbook Locket

The Spellbook Locket measures about 4cm high, 3cm across and is a little over 1cm deep (when it’s closed). So, it’s not too big – or heavy – to hang around your neck.

You can slot two pictures of your choice inside the locket – the photo just shows a fun sample. So, my tutorial doesn’t include photos for inside. That leaves you free to choose your own!

This is the perfect gift for any time of year, but it occurred to me that it would also make a fun Hallowe’en jewellery project. So, it’s perfect for all those would-be witches and wizards out there!
