Very Hungry Caterpillar Bracelet Idea

As a child I loved the book, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle. Something about this must have stuck with me over the years as I remember making caterpillars from pom-poms as well! When I was asked to come up with an idea for a workshop linked to beaded clasps, I ended up creating this Very Hungry Caterpillar Bracelet.

I wanted to help people start working with Superduo or Twin Hole beads. In addition, I wanted to explore some of the ideas I had begun developing in my Beaded Clasps book. I had a stock of green Superduos, so I used these to create a simple bracelet structure. It had two key features: an uneven look rather like the edges of a cabbage or lettuce, and a structure that was full of holes. This both represented the holes created by the caterpillars eating their way through the leaf, and allowed me to add multiple clasps to the design.

Project Details

I made the Very Hungry Caterpillar separately, using a combination of different sizes and shades of Delicas to create the shape. He can be used to fasten the bracelet via a toggle attached to his under-side. You can create as many different caterpillars as you wish and add them at different points around the bracelet. The hole structure lets you add your caterpillars. Furthermore, you can change the bracelet around to match different outfits.

For the bracelet you will be working in a simple stitch using Superduos. For the Very Hungry Caterpillar you will need size 10 Delicas, size 11 Delicas and size 15 Delicas. You will be using tubular Peyote stitch. This pattern is suitable for all levels. It includes detailed diagrams and photos to illustrate thread paths and the finished components of the Very Hungry Caterpillar bracelet. So, have some fun with this project!
