Shooting Star

Every year I try to come up with some new ideas for Christmas beading projects. For 2015 I decided to go sparkly!

This shooting star ornament uses delicate blue crystal and clear beads. I used a Swarovski Rivoli to create the centre of the shooting star. The design evolved from two different beads. I fell in love with some twisted bugle beads in a beautiful pale blue and I wanted to find a way to incorporate spike beads. So, I ended up using the spike beads to create the arms on the star. The bugle beads made a magical tail for my shooting star. Then, I completed the design with a little bridge between the top two arms. This made it easy to attach a ribbon for hanging the star up as a decoration. The star is two-sided, so it will look the same from both sides as it hangs on a Christmas tree.

Techniques

You are going to be working in basic Right Angle Weave and Peyote stitch to encase your Rivolis. Then, attach the spike beads using Peyote stitch. Use a simple beaded fringe to make the tail for the shooting star.

None of the techniques are complex, but this is a little fiddly in places, so I would recommend this pattern for intermediate level. If you have a bit of experience already and want to push yourself, then you can download free technique sheets to help you with the basics. I wrote the pattern with clear step-by-step instructions and diagrams. So it should be perfectly possible to follow even if you are still improving your skills and growing in confidence.
