Materials and Techniques

The smoked salmon bagel is made using tubular and circular Peyote, plus a little basic herringbone. I have assumed that you have some familiarity with these techniques. But the pattern includes some diagrams to remind you of thread paths.

If you need more help, you can download a free tutorial from me on this website.

You will need the following materials:

  • size 15 delicas
  • size 11 delicas
  • Delicas in size 10
  • Thread
  • Beading needle and scissors

Smoked Salmon Bagel

I developed the Smoked Salmon Bagel pattern from one of the projects in my book, ‘Sweet Treats’. It occurred to me that the donuts could equally be used as bagels!.

I used a mixture of delica sizes and colouring to create the various ingredients of the smoked salmon bagel. You will be working in circular and tubular Peyote stitch, but also using a very small amount of basic Herringbone.

The instructions include diagrams to show you how to work in these stitches. So, I have suggested the smoked salmon bagel is suitable for intermediate beaders.

However, if you are an ambitious beginner, you should be able to manage this and you can find free tutorials for basic beading stitches in the free tutorials section on this website.

Once you have completed your smoked salmon bagel, you can simply use it as an ornament. Or you could wear it as a pendant or turn it into a key ring or fridge magnet. Just attach the appropriate finding to your bagel.

I made several smoked salmon bagels and stitched them together in a group. Then I used this as a focal feature on a necklace.

I know that the donut pattern from which this evolved has been a particularly popular project. So, I hope this will give new opportunities for those of you who have enjoyed the donuts… Just don’t eat them all at once!

I have to have this as something different to add to my ever expanding list of bead patterns of things to make and also how something different has to be has to be made to wear in this boring world and brighten it up with a funky piece of jewellery and why not a bagel
