These EVA beads are the hottest new design from Potomac Bead Company. So, let me tell you a little more about them.
Size and Shape
The EVA bead design is basically a smaller version of the very popular AVA bead. This unusual chevron shaped bead took the market by storm a couple of years ago.
So, the EVA, it’s smaller sister, measures 6x9mm. Because of this smaller size, the hole structure is actually a little different.
If you are used to using the AVA beads, you will be familiar with their 3-hole structure. One hole passes through each of the two arms and one hole passes through the bottom of the V at the base. So, you would logically expect the EVA to be the same. In fact, this new bead only has two holes – as you can see from the photos.
So, if you are expecting to just be able to use these beads in place of the AVA beads, I am going to disappoint you.
How do you use EVA beads?
I was lucky enough to be able to try out the EVA beads before they came to market. So, I quickly discovered that I needed to create new thread paths to join them.
This actually proved to be an advantage when I was making my ‘Cross’ necklace. I found the EVAs slotted together beautifully to form the cross shape. So, that is a simple design to try out these beads.
Because your packs of EVAs only contain 20 beads, you will want to use them as ‘feature’ beads. Like the AVA beads, this shape is tricky to manufacture. The glass has to be pressed by hand. So, this more time-consuming manufacturing process results in a higher price.
I managed to use just a couple of packs of EVA beads to create a second necklace with a focal front section. So, when it comes to designing, think about how you can mix different beads together so the EVAs become a highlight.
