About the Key Lime Pie Necklace

Key Lime Pie is one of my favourite desserts – well, at least it was before I had to cut sugar and citrus out of my diet!…so that may explain how I came to make a beaded Key Lime Pie. I imagine I was suffering from a craving one day, so out came the beads.

Actually that’s not strictly true! The key lime pie necklace really evolved after I had published my Sweet Treats book. The more cake and dessert designs I thought about, the more ideas kept flowing, so I soon ended up with far too many to fit into the book.

The key lime pie itself came from some experiments with Peyote stitch triangles. I made the slices of key lime pie using this technique. Once I had them, I decided to follow the best modern cooking traditions and start deconstructing my food. So, I moved on to use the triangles to create a slice of lime. This became the concealment for the clasp. The cream that sits on top of the pie and forms the necklace is a design that I had evolved for the book. I combined it with 4mm pearls.

Materials and Sizing

For a slightly crazy idea, this Key Lime Pie necklace is actually very wearable. After all, it is essentially just a pendant on a chain. The slices of pie are fairly thin, so they won’t stick out too far as you wear the necklace. The pendant measures between 2″ and 3″ across the widest point. You are of course free to adapt the design and just use a single slice of pie, or perhaps just the slice of lime if you prefer.

The key lime pie and the slices of lime will need size 11 delicas. The cream uses a mixture of white seed beads in different sizes. You can check my beading supplies for all these materials.

If you don’t like the cream chain, you can just make the pendant, or a part of the pendant on its own and then wear it on an ordinary chain. You can adjust the length of the necklace to suit you.

Experience Level

This project is definitely for intermediate to advanced beaders. You want to feel comfortable working in circular and tubular Peyote before you start this. Luckily, if you need some help there, I have a free tutorial that you can download.

As you will have gathered, this design is formed of various components. So, although it is a fairly involved project, you can make it in stages with ease.
